Bouche-du-Rhône, meaning the mouth of Rhone, is the department of France around the area where the river Rhône runs out into the Mediterranean. Linking the old waterway of Rhône with the ocean, this area has been an important harbor since roman times.
The capital and biggest city in Bouche-du-Rhône is Marseille. For tourists the area offers a wide variety of sights. Some of the old cities, most typical of Provence is here: Aix en Procence, Arles and Salon de Provence. Fishing villages like Cassis and La Ciotat offers wonderful beaches, and the Calanques between Cassis and Marseille is amazing. The Rhône river delta is fantastic nature reserve called Carmargue, here you can see flamingos and wild horses.
